Global Grape Production in 2022 Reached the Second Highest Peak of the Last Twenty Years

June 6th – Since 2000, the share of non-pressed grapes has significantly increased, mainly due to the rise in production of table grapes that has almost doubled in twenty years.

World production of grapes in 2022 is estimated at 80.1 million tonnes, showing a decline of 3% compared to 2021. Grape production has stabilised since 2013. China is by far the first producer with 15.6 mt, followed by Italy (8.1 mt), and France (6.2 mt). In 2022, 93 countries produced fresh grapes and the top ten producers account for 70% of the world total.

In terms of areas under vine at world level, there is a stable trend since 2017. This can be attributed to 2 main factors:

TABLE GRAPE

Table grape production was up +3% in 2022 compared to 2021, reaching a volume of 31.5 million tonnes. The top ten producing countries are: China, -which accounts for the 40% of the world production- followed by India, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Uzbekistan, Italy, United States, Brazil and finally, Peru.

Asia is the most important continent for table grape production, surpassing all others. In fact, more than half of the table grape production is concentrated in this region. Europe, with a few exceptions, specialises mainly in the cultivation of wine grapes.

Finally, countries such as the USA, Chile, South Africa and Brazil show a balanced approach to grape production, with notable contributions from various grape types.

DRIED GRAPE

In 2022, world production of dried grapes reached 1.4 million tonnes, an increase of 7% over the previous year.

The production of driedgrapes is highly concentrated in Asia and the Americas, which account for more than 90% of world production.

Among the main producers, Turkey has the largest share with 28%, followed by the United States with 22%. It is worth noting that China has become a major player in the sultana sector, more than doubling its production since 2000 to 170,000 tonnes.

WINE PRODUCTION

In 2022 world wine production, excluding juices and musts, is estimated at 258 mhl, marking a decrease of almost 3 mhl (-1%), compared to 2021. This is due to higher-than-expected harvest volume in Europe despite the drought and heat waves during spring and summer, and an average production level recorded in the Southern Hemisphere.

Overall, the 2022 global wine production volume can be considered, for the fourth consecutive year, slightly below its 20-year average

WINE CONSUMPTION

World wine consumption in 2022 is estimated at 232 mhl, marking a decrease of 1% compared to 2021.

The negative trend that began in 2018 is mainly due to the drop in Chinese consumption, which has fallen by an average of 2 mhl per year, and to the Covid-19 sanitary crisis.

In 2022, the energy crisis and disruptions in global supply chains led to higher production and distribution costs, which resulted in higher wine prices. and high levels of inflation hitting the purchasing power of consumers.

WINE TRADE

In 2022, international wine trade performed strongly, with world wine exports reaching 106 mhl. While this represented a slight decrease of 6% in volume compared to the previous year, it set a record in value terms, increasing by 9% year-on-year to €38 billion.

This remarkable growth in value was driven also by the strong market demand for sparkling wine. Among the different wine categories, it was the only one to record increases in both volume and value, with growth of 5% and 18% respectively.
